Remembering Chief Justice Kay McFarland
On August 18, 2015, former Chief Justice Kay McFarland passed away at the age of 80. A charter member of this organization, Justice McFarland blazed the trail that many female attorneys now walk. She was the first woman elected to serve as a judge in Shawnee County, the first woman in Kansas to serve as a district judge, and the first and only female chief justice on the Kansas Supreme Court. Justice McFarland represented all the tenets of this organization and inspired many women to follow in her very prestigious footsteps.
In 2006, WAAT honored Justice McFarland with the first-ever McFarland Award. This award serves to recognize an individual who has achieved professional excellence, influenced other women to pursue legal careers, opened doors for female attorneys, and advanced opportunities for women within the legal community. Clearly, Justice McFarland embodied all of these qualities, and we owe her a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid.
In honor of Justice McFarland's life, work, and legacy, the WAAT Board of Directors intends to donate money to the Friends of the Topeka Zoo in her honor. Obviously, this contribution is but a small token of our thanks for Justice McFarland's many contributions to the legal field, but it is the least we can do for someone who has opened so many doors to women--and whose legacy will continue to do so for many years to come.
